The Ralph M. Barford Foundation believes that every individual deserves the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Improved access to equitable and inclusive healthcare and education is the core of our vision of a healthy, meaningful life for all.
Our Mission
Advance educational success through post-secondary education and invest in support for young children as they progress along the continuum of early education and learning.
Improve healthcare outcomes for people with Multiple Sclerosis by investing in both traditional and innovative approaches to MS research, patient care and treatment.
Two Areas of Impact
Our philanthropic efforts are concentrated where we can make the greatest difference.
Education
We believe that education is one of the most powerful levers for equity — and that access to opportunity should be universal. Our grant-making in this area targets two connected moments in a young person's educational journey: foundational literacy and post-secondary education.
We provide funding to qualified organizations that:
- Recognize academic excellence through post-secondary scholarships
- Open doors to post-secondary education through bursaries
- Support children to read at grade level by the time they leave elementary school
Multiple Sclerosis
We believe that meaningful progress on multiple sclerosis requires action at every level — from the laboratory to the home. Our grant making in this area targets the gaps that slow discovery and leave people without adequate support.
We provide funding to qualified organizations that:
- Builds the field — supporting professorships, research collaboratives, and field-building initiatives that grow capacity in MS research
- Addresses research gaps — directing resources toward understudied questions and underserved populations where the evidence base remains thin
- Serves people living with MS directly — funding programs and services that improve quality of life, access to care, and day-to-day wellbeing for those affected by the disease
Please note: In addition to our two core focus areas, the Ralph M. Barford Foundation maintains a separate funding envelope for emergency response and specialized programs which is not part of our open application processes.
